Journal #3: Morals

1)     To what extent do we learn these ideas of right & wrong from our environment?  To what extent is this morality intrinsic, i.e., present in us from birth? I believe that we learn the rights and wrongs from our parents. By spending so much time with them, we develop our sense of right and wrong from them by adopting their mannerisms, their skills and what they think is right and wrong. I believe morality is something that is present from us in birth and we develop it over time. I also think events and people that we encounter along the way to help develop our sense of morality. Additionally, tragic events and positive events help realize what we think is right and wrong through our daily life. I believe that would be applicable. 2)     Are there actions you believe are always morally wrong? Which actions? Why or why not? I think that purposefully taking advantage of others and being dishonest to others is always morally wrong. An example of taking a...

Journal #2: Jeff Passan

I chose to talk about Jeff Passan, because he is a fantastic baseball journalist. He stands out from other journalists because he consistently and accurately breaks pertinent baseball news. Passan is the prime example of someone who works hard to get to their dream job they were at today. Passan, 39, didn’t even start writing about baseball. Passan wrote about basketball at the University of Syracuse, where he graduated with a degree in journalism. He then covered basketball at Fresno State and proceeded to write books about football and baseball, while covering basketball. By doing that, Passan shows that he has incredible knowledge that is diversified enough to be knowledgeable to talk about three different sports. I follow him because Passan is someone who is reliable with their baseball knowledge and loves to cover all aspects of the game. Their writing is very well laid out and factual, but I mostly follow him on Twitter, where I can get short spurts of information quickly. I wish...

Introductory Post

My name is Charlie Cowan and I’m a second year junior (credits-wise) here at NDSU. I went to high school at Minnetonka High School in Minnetonka, MN, close to my hometown of Shorewood, MN. I transferred from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs after my freshman year. I chose NDSU because I am closer to home and enjoying my sport management program here as well. I’m taking this class because it is required for my major and I’ve been interested in different writing styles and how those correspond with one another. My major is Sport Management and I want to work in Communications or PR in a professional sports organization. In my experience, the proper way of eating a PB&J sandwich is slightly more jelly than peanut butter. I can offer a hard working attitude and a commitment to do the best that I can. I’m hoping to gain different perspectives on writing styles and what I can work on better to prepare myself. My least favorite movie would be Hitting The Curve with Clint East...

Opening Journal: Biases

Opening Journal Biases are developed through a variety of mediums, such as media they interact with, friends they talk to and places they go. That can influence how someone looks at the world. For example, if someone views conservative media and interacts with conservative friends, their biases will be similar to a conservative leaning, and same with those who lean more liberally on the political scale. I also think biases are formed through family opinions- especially with your parents. When you’re young, you identify with your parents opinions, because you often times don’t know any better.  My biases come from a variety of sources, including the media I interact with, my friends and my family. I have switched my political beliefs after becoming more educated on issues and realizing how my vote and what politicians beliefs I am voting for. I could change my biases based on how my family reacts and how the political climate changes. It’s important to implement background che...
