Journal #2: Jeff Passan

I chose to talk about Jeff Passan, because he is a fantastic baseball journalist. He stands out from other journalists because he consistently and accurately breaks pertinent baseball news. Passan is the prime example of someone who works hard to get to their dream job they were at today. Passan, 39, didn’t even start writing about baseball. Passan wrote about basketball at the University of Syracuse, where he graduated with a degree in journalism. He then covered basketball at Fresno State and proceeded to write books about football and baseball, while covering basketball. By doing that, Passan shows that he has incredible knowledge that is diversified enough to be knowledgeable to talk about three different sports. I follow him because Passan is someone who is reliable with their baseball knowledge and loves to cover all aspects of the game. Their writing is very well laid out and factual, but I mostly follow him on Twitter, where I can get short spurts of information quickly. I wish Passan could improve by writing more feature pieces of athletes that aren’t very well known, but have a great backstory. Us baseball fans always hear about the high profile athletes, but it would be nice to hear a couple of feel good stories now and then.

Week 4 Newswriting

On November 7th, 2018, President Trump held a press conference that had a very testy exchange with CNN reporter Jim Acosta. Acosta “challenged” him on Trump’s opinion of immigrants calling it a “caravan”, when in fact, it wasn’t a caravan. During the exchange, Trump replied sarcastically, thanking him for telling him what a caravan was. After Acosta’s disagreement with Trump, Acosta refused to back down from the president, prompting an intern to come over and wrestle the microphone free from Acosta. Acosta tried to ask his follow up question, but was denied. Trump, visibly frustrated, moved on to another reporter. In an interview with Fox News, Trump wants the country open so people can “pack the churches” and open the businesses. However, health organizations are warning that New York could become the epicenter of the coronavirus. As of March 24th, 700+ people died from the virus and thousands have contracted it. Dow Jones had its largest gain since 1933 due to the rumored completion of a stimulus bill in Congress. Governor Andrew Cuomo said that every state will be 2-3 weeks out from their peak and they should prepare. Cuomo also asked that the federal government provided more ventilators to them.
