Segment #1: President Trump

President Trump wants the country opened by Easter. In an interview with Fox News, Trump wants the country open so people can “pack the churches” and open the businesses. However, health organizations are warning that New York could become the epicenter of the coronavirus. As of March 24th, 700+ people died from the virus and thousands have contracted it. Dow Jones had its largest gain since 1933 due to the rumored completion of a stimulus bill in Congress. Governor Andrew Cuomo said that every state will be 2-3 weeks out from their peak and they should prepare. Cuomo also asked that the federal government provided more ventilators to them. Cuomo, who requested 30,000, said that he only received 4,000 from the government, which will not supplement the appropriate amount needed for them. “We are your future,” Cuomo said in his press conference. 1 in 4 people are in the ICU suffering from coronavirus.

Segment #2: Lives/Livelihood

President Trump wants people back to work by Easter Sunday. As previously mentioned, Trump wants workers up and running by Easter Sunday. However, this is an unsubstantiated claim. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the head of infectious diseases at CDC, said that we should focus on the hard facts before reopening our borders, adding that they need to be flexible too. 61% percent of Americans believe the economy is in bad shape, compared to 30% last year. Governor Andrew Cuomo strongly disagreed. Cuomo said that opening borders too early could kill more and trying to find the balance of the economy or saving lives. Dr. Tom Inglesby said that Easter isn’t a good time to end the social distancing, because we may not see the effects of social distancing until then. Another Great Depression could be an effect of this public health crisis. This is different than the flu season because people aren’t flowing into the hospitals and needing ventilators like the traditional flu.

There is also $130B for hospitals in the bill.  Each individual will receive $1200, $3000 for families. However, some groups will be excluded from the stimulus plan. As of now, there is a rumor that certain individuals who make more than $75,000 will receive a discounted or none of the $1200 stimulus check from the government. Unemployment insurance will increase from 26-39 weeks, but some states like Georgia and Ohio have reported technical issues on their unemployment website. Those benefits can apply to salaried workers, freelancers. As of today, there are 415,800+ cases of coronavirus.

Each year, large sponsors like Coca Cola, Nike and McDonalds give millions of dollars to the Olympics and Japan will not receive that extra revenue for another year. Opening Journal: Biases

Opening Journal Biases are developed through a variety of mediums, such as media they interact with, friends they talk to and places they go. That can influence how someone looks at the world. For example, if someone views conservative media and interacts with conservative friends, their biases will be similar to a conservative leaning, and same with those who lean more liberally on the political scale. I also think biases are formed through family opinions- especially with your parents. When you’re young, you identify with your parents opinions, because you often times don’t know any better.  My biases come from a variety of sources, including the media I interact with, my friends and my family. I have switched my political beliefs after becoming more educated on issues and realizing how my vote and what politicians beliefs I am voting for. I could change my biases based on how my family reacts and how the political climate changes. It’s important to implement background che...
