Journal #11: Beat Writer

I am going to choose a sports beat, specifically baseball. I chose sports because limiting myself to baseball might not be the best idea, because I might not have enough contacts. I see this beat eventually helping me cover the news for a particular team. Here are my contacts that I’d use:

Note: I have redacted all contact information due to this being posted on my blog. If you need any contact information, please send me an email.

Hayden Wesneski
Professional Pitcher for the New York Yankees
(XXX) XXX-XXXX

If I need help talking about the challenges of players in Minor League Baseball, I’d reach out to Hayden. When I published a podcast with him, it was extremely well received and he was very approachable. Playing for the Yankees, I could talk to him about the COVID-19 outbreak and how he was quarantined for two weeks.

Justin Slaten
Professional Pitcher for the Texas Rangers
(XXX) XXX-XXXX

Slaten would be an awesome person to connect with, considering his connections to the Rangers at University of New Mexico, where he pitched. Slaten would help connect me to personnel at University of New Mexico and players in the Rangers organization if needed.

John Bonnes
Founder of Twins Daily
Twitter: @TwinsGeek

I would reach out to John if I needed help on how to create my first baseball beat or if he’d give me any information that I’d need for my blog. I know he’d be happy to help and reach out to me, because he replies fast to my inquiries through Twitter. I know he’d be a valuable asset to me.

Ty Hensley
Professional Pitcher for the Utica Unicorns
(XXX) XXX-XXXX

I would reach out to Ty if I needed him to talk to a group about adversity or getting through something difficult. Losing three full seasons due to injury, he’d be the perfect person to come in and talk about it. Additionally, Ty would be helpful getting me contacts in the Yankees organization and help me develop my beat.

Maxx Tissenbaum
Former Professional Baseball Player
(XXX) XXX-XXXX

If I am writing a piece on former minor league baseball players or life in the minor leagues, I would contact Maxx. He spent a lot of time in minor league baseball and has a lot of connections and stories to add to my story.

Greg Johns
MLB.com reporter for the Seattle Mariners
Twitter: @GregJohnsMLB

When I reached out to Greg a couple of years ago, he was very receptive and replied to my inquiries fast. Greg is a beat writer for the Mariners and would help me get some inside information on the Mariners and help develop my stories to sound fluid and make sense.

Troy Renck
Denver Broncos Insider/Anchor at Denver7
(XXX) XXX-XXXX

I interviewed Troy for my podcast and he was extremely informative. He was an awesome guy and reached out to me if I needed help on any questions for my podcast. I’d reach out to him if I needed any insight on Colorado sports or any tips for me on generating a good story.

Wilson Moore
Sports Reporter at the Missourian
(XXX) XXX-XXX

I have known Wilson for most of my life. He has become one of the premier sports reporters in the Mizzou sports scene. I would contact him because he would give me a great idea and a start to my sports beat. He would also give me insight on college sports that I’d cover.

Paul Lambert
KFAN Radio Personality
(XXX) XXX-XXXX

Paul was extremely nice when we met for his interview two years ago. He was accommodating and I’m sure he would help me if I needed any contacts or any help within the radio industry. I would reach out to him if he needed any help to get on KFAN or any contacts with local radio stations.

La Velle Neal
Minneapolis Star Tribune Twins Reporter
612.674.4888

I would reach out to LaVelle if I needed help on Twins news or any experience that he’d recommend to me before getting in the industry. I’d also send him an email and talk to him about his appearances on local radio shows and how to cover a team depending on their record.

Journal #7: Who?

NPR: Ontario’s New License Plates Have A Problem: You Can’t Read Them Who: Citizens of Ontario, Canada. What: New license plates are unreadable at night. When: They were introduced in early February, but have been a problem as of late. Where: Ontario, a province in Canada. Why: When a light is shined on the license plates, they are virtually unreadable at night.  How: The Canadian government didn’t think about the consequences of how light would reflect off of the plate. So What? This makes it hard for police and other cars to identify license plates in the dark.  What’s Next? If there is enough feedback, Ontario government will look into revamping and reconstructing the license plates.  Link:  https://www.npr.org/2020/02/18/807133008/ontarios-new-license-plates-have-a-problem-you-can-t-read-them Huffington Post: 36 Year Old Woman Arrested For Calling 911 After Parents Shut Off Cellphone Who: The 36 Year Old Woman (Seloni Khetarpal) and her...

Opening Journal: Biases

Opening Journal Biases are developed through a variety of mediums, such as media they interact with, friends they talk to and places they go. That can influence how someone looks at the world. For example, if someone views conservative media and interacts with conservative friends, their biases will be similar to a conservative leaning, and same with those who lean more liberally on the political scale. I also think biases are formed through family opinions- especially with your parents. When you’re young, you identify with your parents opinions, because you often times don’t know any better.  My biases come from a variety of sources, including the media I interact with, my friends and my family. I have switched my political beliefs after becoming more educated on issues and realizing how my vote and what politicians beliefs I am voting for. I could change my biases based on how my family reacts and how the political climate changes. It’s important to implement background che...

Journal #8: Press Release

Major League Baseball Introduces New Recommendations To Combat Coronavirus  MLB Introduced Initiatives To Prevent Coronavirus NEW YORK, NY: Major League Baseball announced today that they have issued new recommendations to all 30 teams to help prevent the spread of coronavirus amongst players. Commissioner Rob Manfred sent a memo to all 30 teams, advising players to take precautions to avoid coronavirus. These recommendations include avoiding interacting with fans, avoiding handshakes, ensuring that all players have their flu vaccines. Major League Baseball doesn’t have any plans to postpone or delay any games, as Opening Day is almost three weeks away. However, they have a contingency plan in place just in case the virus spreads and interferes with the season.  Along with their recommendations, Major League Baseball has encouraged each team to refer to a local health expert to figure out what they can do to keep their ballpark and team safe, increased communications ...
